Do you assume that grooming your dog isn’t that important—after all, his coat looks to be in okay shape, so why bother?
By Laura Pakis, Certified Dog Trainer and Cynologist
So many dog owners feel grooming their dog is more of a chore than an essential chunk of owning a dog. To them, “grooming” is only for poodles or show dogs of the Westminster Kennel Club.
Sometimes, it isn’t easy to find the time to groom our pets with our increasingly busy lives. The Acme team is here to help. We tested some products to help you select quality “grooming” items.
In addition to our team of “professionals,” we sought out local groomer Kim McMahon of GroomNZoom. She assisted us with testing the products on her clients and shared her comments from a factual professional standpoint.
Jenny Doser, owner of Relax. Rinse. Repeat. She was tired of overspending on health and beauty products full of harsh chemicals, so she started creating handmade, all-natural products. She sent us a bottle of her Fur Refresher to test. We found it to have a minimal scent. “Also, the dog’s fur didn’t have a hint of scent after the mist dried.” The cost is around $12.00 and can be purchased on Amazon. 👎
Chammyz has an extensive line of items from shorts to sweatshirts. All are soft and highly absorbent. So it made sense that they would create a towel for dogs. According to Chammyz, “This dog bone-shaped Chammyz towel will revolutionize how you dry your best furry friend off. Made of our Chammyz technology with built-in side pockets to keep your hands dry and clean. … the Doggy Spaw Towel will handle anything. We tested it on several dogs and found this product to be EXCELLENT! “It is very absorbent, more so than ordinary towels.” Great for dog owners on rainy days and with home baths. It comes in various colors and two sizes; smaller and bigger. Price ranges from $18.00 to $22.00 👍🏻
Eco Dog Care is a fantastic company. They are certified as a Green American business but don’t compromise on the quality of their products. This toxin-free dog shampoo is made of all-natural ingredients that work well without phosphates, parabens, or other toxins on your pup, your hands, or in the water supply. We found it FABULOUS! “Great lasting scent, got a white lab very clean and relieved usually irritated skin. LOVE the smell! Not sudsy but cleaned very well.” You can purchase this and their other products from their website ecodogcare.com. The cost for the shampoo is around $18.00 👍🏻
Dogs Love Hownd is a company out of England. Their products are free from harsh chemicals such as alcohol, parabens, soap, and dyes. HOWND pet care products are Leaping Bunny certified by Cruelty-Free International and endorsed by The Ethical Company Organisation and Nature Watch Foundation. It’s a bit difficult to find in the USA, but you can find some of their products on Amazon. We found it to be a “good finishing spray, left the coat with a nice sheen and scent. Nice fresh and not greasy at all”. 👍🏻
We received a bottle of this product to test. I couldn’t find where to purchase it. The “packaging sucks. I broke it just trying to pump the product. It still worked, but disappointing because it looked so cool. Smells great, but that’s it. I’d say it’s just another lavender perfume/after spray.” 👍🏻👎
Grooming is a chance to give your dog’s body a good once-over, and it’s a great way to bond with your dog. Using the products we’ve mentioned should help make the process easier and give you more time to slow down and pay quality attention to your dog.
