Big or small?
Clearly, one of the first things you need to decide is what size you need. Is your dog considering a small, medium, or large dog? These are the common size differences. If you have an extra-large dog then your options become considerably smaller. Your main concern at that point is simply finding carriers big enough for your animal. There aren’t many other options at that point. If you have more than one dog, and they’re smaller then you could get one carrier to hold the both of them. Once you know what size you need, then you can continue to see your options.
Once you know what size carrier you need, you need to figure out what exactly you need out of a carrier. With bigger dogs, the options of functionality grow slim because there is only so much you can do with a dog carrier made for bigger dogs. However, if your dogs are small or medium, you have a few more options. Do you want something simple for the car ride? Something they can stay in even outside? Something you can carry around? Making a list of functions you want out of a carrier will help you when you’re going through your list of options.
Another thing many also need to consider is the size that you’re capable of purchasing. By this we mean the size of your vehicle or the other spaces where you plan to keep the carrier/ crate. This is important for obvious reasons. You don’t want to buy a carrier for your dog that is too big for your vehicle. It then becomes pretty much useless, for that task anyhow. This is an important step you don’t want to forget, or you’ll be returning it and starting all over.
Reviews, reviews, reviews
My mom always told me to check the reviews! This is so true for lost things but when you’re spending a good amount of money on something that you want to ensure is good quality then checking the reviews is something you don’t want to skip. Getting other people’s opinions and thoughts on the item you’re considering are important. They bought it and already know what it’s flaws or imperfections are. If there’s something they wish was different you can read it and decide if that’s something you would also have a problem with. People also post reviews about the things they like about it. If there are certain things you were worried about maybe knowing they aren’t an issue would be reassuring and help you make a decision. There are great online articles that help you analyze reviews to make sure you get the most out of them – a prime example of such a site is PetLife.com.
When looking at the reviews you should also notice some brands that seem to stick out. Maybe some seem to have more positive reviews than negative or vice versa. You use that information to help you find good brands to find a more exact match to what you’re looking for in a carrier. Often brands will have different styles of carriers. This allows you to find a good brand then find a more exact match to what you need out of a carrier.
Choosing the perfect animal carrier for your dog for traveling can be a little tricky but we hope with these few helpful tips that you will find exactly what you’re looking for!
