Dog food is big business these days. And it’s hard to find quality dog food. We think Volhard Dog Nutrition is the answer.
By Laura Pakis, Certified Professional Dog Trainer, and Cynologist
For the past year, Acme Canine has been feeding our dogs; Penny, a 6-year-old Bluetick Coonhound, Autumn, a 13-year-old Boxer mix, Volhard Dog Nutrition.
We started with supplementing the girls’ dog food with Endurance. We changed their dog food to the Natural Diet Foundation 2 AM Porridge and PM Crumble within a month and have served it with the appropriate vegetables, yogurt, and protein since then.
The transition to Volhard’s food was easy for the dogs. It took my husband, Phil, and me several months to figure out the best way to store and prepare the food. I have to say the inconvenience is nothing compared to the quality of health our dogs now have.
What is Volhard Dog Nutrition
Volhard Dog Nutrition started after Wendy Volhard read Juliette de Bairacli Levy’s book, “The Complete Herbal Book for the Dog.”
With her veterinarian’s help, she began a protocol of periodic blood tests to see if Wendy balanced the diet she created for dogs. For over twelve years, she took blood from dogs from different areas of the country, different breeds, and ages. From these blood tests, she tweaked her formula to make sure the recipe was balanced. Satisfied, she finally published the recipe in 1984 under the title “Back to Basics.”
In the early 1990s, she was asked to write a book with Kerry Brown, DVM. The book “The Holistic Guide for a Healthy Dog” was published in 1995, with a second edition published in 2000.
In 1999, Wendy Volhard formulated a dehydrated formula of her recipe and teamed up with a dog food company to market Natural Diet Foundation AM and Natural Diet Foundation PM. She recently developed NDF2, an all-in-one dehydrated food that offers owners an even simpler way to feed their dogs.
Dog Food Options
Volhard Dog Nutrition has three options to feed your pet: Endurance, Natural Diet Foundation 2 (NDF2), and NDF Original AM & PM.
Endurance is a supplement. Adding it to your current dog or cat food ensures the correct acid/alkaline balance for your pet’s digestive tract, which counteracts stress by replacing the nutrients lost in the cooking and processing of commercial dog and cat food. Use it with incomplete raw diets and those dogs and cats who eat a processed diet such as canned food or kibble.
Cost ranges from $25/1 lb. to $95/5 lbs. For a 50 lb. dog, you will sprinkle 2 teaspoons of Endurance over their food at each meal.
Since Endurance has only natural preservatives, it needs to be refrigerated once it is opened.
Natural Diet Foundation 2
NDF2 is a dehydrated foundation mix developed by Wendy Volhard, which allows you to add your own protein to provide your dog with a balanced diet. It is crafted in small batches with whole food ingredients and herbs to support the liver, kidney, heart, lungs, stomach, and digestive tract.
This recipe has been clinically tested on different breeds, sizes, and ages of dogs in different regional locations for over 40 years. It exceeds the nutritional levels established by the NRC and AAFCO Dog Food Nutrient Profiles for All Life Stages, including the growth of large size dogs.
The cost of Natural Diet Foundation 2 is $35/2 lbs. to $145/20 lbs. A 50 lb dog would eat 1/2 cup + 1 tablespoon plus 1/2 cup + 1 tablespoon of raw protein at each meal.
NDF AM Porridge and PM Crumble
The NDF AM/PM Diet has been clinically tested on different breeds, sizes, and ages of dogs (bloodwork and urine) for over 30 years. It also needs to be refrigerated after opening.
The cost for AM Porridge is $35/5 lbs. to $75/20 lbs. On average, a 50 lb. dog would eat 1/4 cup of porridge a day along with vegetables and whole-fat yogurt.
PM Crumble’s cost ranges from $45/5 lbs. to $95/20 lbs. With PM Crumble, a 50 lb. dog would eat 1/2 cup of crumble a day with 80/20 raw protein.
Acme Canine uses the Original AM & PM dog foods since our dog, Autumn, is 13 years old. This option is used for dogs with delicate digestive systems, dogs who have been sick, or who are getting old. Penny (who is 6 years old) enjoys what Autumn is eating.
It’s definitely more work with food preparation since the AM and PM food separates the meat from the grains in two separate meals. Volhard’s reasoning for this is that it is easier for the dog to digest two food groups at one time instead of 3.
Over the past year, Acme Canine has developed an efficient way to prepare a week’s worth of food, which you can read about in How to prepare Volhard Dog Nutrition AM & PM food for a week.
As with most quality dog food companies, Volhard’s pet food products use only human-grade ingredients produced by U.S. growers. But the cool thing about Volhard is that each batch is tested three times during production for bacteria, molds, fungi, salmonella, and E. Coli. What this means is their dog food should never be recalled.
Besides, the products have been clinically tested (annual blood, thyroid, urine, and fecal analyses) for over 30 years on Wendy Volhard’s own dogs and those of her students. We are not aware of any other dog food that undergoes such continuous and rigorous testing.
Also, you can use their products throughout your pet’s life, from puppy through adulthood. All of their products promote good digestion, regardless of whether your pets have chronic problems, sensitive stomachs, are ill, or are already healthy – and you want him to stay that way!
Acme Canine was amazed at the change in our dogs after just feeding them Endurance. Autumn had more energy, and her ‘old dog’ nose lost its crustiness. And not only did both dogs’ coats changed to a shiny gloss, but you could see more muscle on their bodies.
Even their veterinarian took notice at their last checkup. He said their teeth were great (no tartar), their coats looked fantastic, and they were a perfect weight. Pretty impressive, huh.
Acme Canine gives Volhard Dog Nutrition 4 paws up for a quality product that truly does what the company says it does, its integrity, but most importantly, both Penny and Autumn LOVE the food.
