If you are concerned about mice making their way into your home, you may be looking for many different ways to prevent them. In doing so, you may have thought about using your dog to keep rodents away from your home. While this might work, some prevention steps may serve you better. Continue reading to find out more about whether or not your pet dog will keep mice away from your home.

Use a Dog

Using your pet dog to keep mice away from your home may work fairly well, but it will not solve all of your problems. One of the biggest issues with this is that your dog can only be in one place at one time. If your pet is lying in the front of your house, it cannot keep watch for mice around the back of your house, creating an easy way for mice to get to your home. Another problem is that when your dog sleeps, a mouse’s movements will likely not wake it up, allowing the mouse to get through again. Do not despair, though, as there are many other prevention steps you can take to keep mice away from your home.

Clean It Up

One of the best ways to keep mice away from your home is to keep them away from your yard. Yards often present a great deal of attraction to rodents, as they are a place for easy food sources and a lot of warmth and shelter options. Start by simply keeping your grass and weeds short, as tall weeds provide excellent cover for mice. The next step is to make sure any pet food and garbage are locked up tightly, as those are straightforward food sources. Finally, be sure to clean up any wood piles, debris, or stones or bricks that may be located around your home, as these provide a lot of cover and protection for rodents.

Inspect and Repair

The best way to keep mice out of your home is first to inspect your home. Examine the interior and exterior of your home from top to bottom, paying special attention to any cracks, holes, or gaps you see. Once you have completed your inspection, repair any problem areas that you may have seen. A great way to do this is to fix any holes or gaps with some all-weather sealant or steel wool, as these keep rodents out for good. Also, be sure to check where your appliances meet the outside, as there are often holes and other entry points for rodents. Steel wool works great for these areas too.

Try Essential Oils

Shockingly enough, rats and mice are repelled by certain odors. There are various oils and other household items you can use to keep rats and mice away. One of the good ones to try is to use peppermint essential oils. Rodents hate the smell of it and will stay away. You can also plant mint plants around your house to keep them away as well. Another natural repellent uses cayenne pepper or tabasco sauce to deter mice from making their way into your home. Mix some of the cayenne or tabasco with water and spray it around the border of your home. Learn more about mice and different mouse repellents at mousecontrol.org

These experts can even help apply or install preventive measures you want to take. Mice are notorious for being hard to eradicate from your home, so having a professional on your side is always a great idea.
