What is a Snuffle mat? Are They Good for Dogs?

In the book Canine Enrichment in the Real World, Bender & Strong write about
Before long, most dogs start to use their noses. It’s fairly obvious when they do: nose goes to ground and they start making deep snuffling noises as they breathe through their nose more than their mouth. When that happens, you shouldn’t need to help them anymore; you have successfully taught your dog to use their nose to seek out food. This activity is surprisingly exhausting for dogs. Most of our clients who do this with their dogs report that it can easily take their dog an hour to finish breakfast, and when they’re done they take a long nap. Using their nose and their brain to seek out and find their breakfast is hard work!

They are very good for dogs, and help dogs address their need to forage and sniff. These mats develop a dog’s sense of smell at the same time they eat – so you get to accomplish two key activities at once.
They’re especially good for older dogs or dogs with mobility issues, who can get a lot of stimulation and nose work without a lot of movement.
According to vet Dr. Joanna Woodnutt, “Spending 15 minutes using their brain in this way can be just as tiring as walking for an hour.”

I purchased retail units for all of these off of Amazon. Two were provided as test units and the rest were purchased at retail, but if you purchase one of them thru a link in this piece we’ll receive a fee. I tested them with my test dog across a few weeks.

– partyelf on Amazon reviewssnuffle mat. Too many of these are made with stiff, non flexible fabric and really don’t function as a truesnuffle mat that you can bury treats in and a dog can dig for. Not so with this mat – it works as it’s intended. My dog likes it so much, he thinks it’s his new bed, and he sleeps on it – so that is a testament to how soft and fluffy it is. It’s a nice size for the price point and I would easily recommend.”
While we can’t suggest using this as a bed, we do agree with the review. This

The con of this mat is that it does tend to slide around a little bit on some floors and doesn’t have the best no-slip backing. Additionally, you’ll want to watch your dog when you use it to avoid unwanted pulling.
DOGRICHMENT Salad Bowl Snuffle Mat
- Slows Down Your Dog's Eating
- Turns Mealtime into an Enriching Foraging Adventure
- Double Loop Polar Fleece Construction Means Superior Soft Snuffling
This is a great mat for smaller dogs, and my test corgi absolutely loved it.
This mat distinguishes itself thru its double-loop construction and high quality fabric. With the double-loops, there is more snuffling and foraging action, than comparable products with one row of loops. This is because treats can be hidden inside the loops in addition to alongside the loops. It is also fast and easy to put treats into the mat.
In contrast to some other mats we looked at, the polar fleece was very soft and got even softer after a machine wash. Plus, the non-stick backing was much closer to being effective than on other mats.

On the cons side, the edges of snuffles are slightly rough and the mat isn’t very big – both are opportunities for improvement.

AWOOF Big Snuffle Mat
- Big mat with many hiding places & different kinds of leaves
- Folds up and clips together to put away
- Crinkle paper and other fun features for even more snuffling
The AWOOF mat is big, fun, and easy to put away. It’s a little pricier, (prices change all the time so check the latest price on Amazon), but it’s worth it.

The multiple snuffling modes between the different kinds of leaves provide a lot more stimulation for your dog than other mats.
Alibuy Dog Snuffle Mat
- Great value for what you get
- Many kinds of different snuffle fingers to hide kibble
- Soft, quality fabric
The Alibuy snuffle mat was one of our favorites of the ones we tested and narrowly missed our top choice. We felt like it as a great value and very interactive
On the negative side, the mat is quite small. Additionally, the ‘non-slip backing’, well, isn’t, and it slides around a great deal. Plus many of the

It also included a free carrot to play with, which was fun and enjoyable.

The Vivfying and Related Snuffle Mats
The primary good thing to say about these is that they’re really inexpensive. They seem to be very similar products with the same design and fabric choices, with different colorways.
The fabric is VERY stiff and doesn’t fall over kibble particularly well, and these are pretty small. Our test dog also seemed to want to tip over these more than the more mat-shaped one, but that will vary from dog to dog.

They can, as they provide more nose-work and foraging activities for the dog. The mental stimulation of sniffing and hunting is tiring for dogs.
Any typical kibble will work. Smaller pieces are better and create more ‘snuffling’ work for the dog – if you use larger treats you’ll want to cut or tear them into smaller pieces that can hide amongst the fabric.
